Sarazm, on the Zeravshan river just inside Tajikistan, is one of Central Asia's oldest proto-urban settlements. From the 4th millennium BC its people worked copper and tin and traded with steppe herders, southern Turkmenistan, Iran and the Indus valley. Its finds include the richly adorned burial known as the Princess of Sarazm. Excavated since 1977, it became a World Heritage Site in 2010.
