Timur (Tamerlane) seized power in 1370 and made Samarkand the capital of an empire won by conquest from Delhi to Anatolia, bringing captured craftsmen to build the Bibi-Khanym mosque and his own tomb, the Gur-e-Amir. His grandson Ulugh Beg ruled the city as a centre of learning, building a madrasa on the Registan and an observatory whose star tables were the most accurate of their age.
