Siege and fall of Barcelona

In the War of the Spanish Succession Barcelona backed the Habsburg claimant, and when its allies made peace the city fought on alone. Bourbon French and Spanish troops besieged it for fourteen months and stormed it on 11 September 1714. Philip V then abolished Catalonia's own institutions and built a fortress, the Ciutadella, over a demolished district. 11 September is now Catalonia's national day.
