In July 1938 the Republican army crossed the Ebro by night in boats and on pontoon bridges, trying to reunite its divided territory and buy time for help from abroad. Franco's forces, backed by German and Italian aircraft, ground the offensive down in four months of fighting in the hills of the Terra Alta. The defeat destroyed the Republic's army, and Catalonia fell early in 1939.
