During the Bosnian War, Bosnian Serb forces surrounded Sarajevo and shelled and sniped at the city from the hills for almost four years, the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare. More than 11,000 people were killed. Residents survived on aid flown into the airport and supplies carried through a tunnel dug beneath it.
