French and American forces under the Comte d'Estaing and Benjamin Lincoln besieged British-held Savannah and on 9 October 1779 stormed the Spring Hill redoubt. The assault failed with heavy losses, and the Polish cavalry commander Casimir Pulaski was mortally wounded. Among the French troops were about 545 free men of colour from Saint-Domingue, today's Haiti, whose part is now marked in Franklin Square.
