French secret service agents fixed two bombs to the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior at Marsden Wharf in Auckland, where it was preparing to lead a protest flotilla to France's nuclear test site at Moruroa. The ship sank and the photographer Fernando Pereira drowned. Two agents were caught and convicted of manslaughter. The attack turned New Zealand further towards its nuclear-free policy and away from its Western allies.
