The US battleship Maine, sent to Havana during Cuba's war of independence from Spain, exploded at anchor in the harbour, killing more than 260 of her crew. American newspapers blamed Spain, though later studies point to a fire in a coal bunker. War followed in April; Spain lost Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines, and the United States became an overseas colonial power.
