After three decades of campaigning, led at first by the activist Chi Chia-wei, Taiwan's Constitutional Court ruled in May 2017 that the ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. Following a hostile referendum in 2018, the Legislative Yuan passed a marriage law on 17 May 2019, and couples married from 24 May, the first in Asia to do so.
