More than 40 Māori rangatira (chiefs) signed a treaty with the British Crown at Waitangi on 6 February 1840, and over 500 had signed copies around the country by September. The English and Māori texts differ on sovereignty and authority, and disputes over the treaty have shaped New Zealand ever since. Waitangi Day is the national day.
