After a young Black man was accused of assaulting a white woman in a downtown elevator, armed white mobs attacked Greenwood, Tulsa's prosperous Black district known as Black Wall Street. In less than a day they burned some 35 blocks and killed as many as 300 people. The massacre was left out of school lessons for decades; the Greenwood Rising history centre opened in its centenary year, 2021.
