The Underground Railroad in Adams County

Just north of the Mason-Dixon line, Adams County lay on an escape route out of Maryland. Free Black residents of Gettysburg and of Yellow Hill, a small settlement near Biglerville, worked with Quaker farmers of the Menallen meeting to hide freedom seekers and send them north. Slave catchers worked the same roads, and in 1845 a free woman, Kitty Payne, was kidnapped with her children from a farm near Gettysburg.
