Halifax beautician and businesswoman Viola Desmond, stranded in New Glasgow by a car breakdown, sat downstairs at the Roseland Theatre, a section kept for white patrons. She was dragged out, jailed overnight and convicted of a one-cent tax offence. Her challenge, backed by Nova Scotia's Black community, became a landmark of Canadian civil rights; she was pardoned in 2010 and appears on the $10 note.
