An army uprising at Wuchang in October 1911 spread across southern China, and on 1 January 1912 Sun Yat-sen was inaugurated in Nanjing as provisional president of the Republic of China. The last Qing emperor abdicated weeks later, ending more than 2,000 years of imperial rule. Sun's mausoleum on Purple Mountain overlooks the city.
