Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin met at the Livadia Palace near Yalta to plan Germany's defeat and the post-war order. They agreed on occupation zones, Soviet entry into the war against Japan and a conference to found the United Nations, and promised free elections in Poland. Soviet control of Eastern Europe made 'Yalta' a byword for the continent's division.
