Four Aboriginal activists planted a beach umbrella on the lawn opposite Parliament House in Canberra on Australia Day 1972, calling it an embassy because Aboriginal people were treated as foreigners in their own land. The protest for land rights grew into a camp that police removed and that kept returning. It still stands and is heritage-listed.
