From 1981 AIDS spread through New York, killing tens of thousands of gay men and others while governments were slow to respond. In March 1987 activists founded ACT UP at the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center in Greenwich Village, staging sit-ins on Wall Street, at the FDA and at St Patrick's Cathedral to demand faster access to drugs. Effective combination treatment arrived in 1996.
