When police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, patrons and neighbours fought back, and protests continued for several nights. The uprising energised the gay liberation movement, and the first Pride marches were held on its anniversary in 1970. In 2016 the site became the first US national monument to LGBTQ history.
