After the Compromise of 1867 gave Hungary self-rule within the Habsburg monarchy, Budapest was rebuilt as a national capital. Andrássy Avenue was laid out from 1872, lined with the Opera House and grand apartment buildings. For the 1896 celebrations of a thousand years since the Magyar conquest, the city opened continental Europe's first underground railway beneath it and began the Millennium Monument on Heroes' Square.
