A student march in Budapest became a national uprising: crowds toppled Stalin's statue and fought the secret police and Soviet tanks, and Prime Minister Imre Nagy announced that Hungary would leave the Warsaw Pact. On 4 November Soviet forces returned in strength and crushed the revolt. About 2,500 Hungarians were killed, some 200,000 fled abroad, and Nagy was hanged in 1958.
