Students occupied the National Technical University of Athens to protest against the military junta that had ruled Greece since 1967, broadcasting calls for freedom from a makeshift radio station. Before dawn on 17 November a tank smashed through the main gate, and at least 24 people were killed in the crackdown. The junta fell eight months later, and 17 November is marked every year.
