The German Gustav Line barred the road to Rome beneath the hilltop abbey of Monte Cassino, founded by St Benedict around 529. In four battles, American, British, Indian, New Zealand, French colonial and Polish troops attacked, and Allied bombers destroyed the abbey in February. Polish soldiers raised their flag over the ruins on 18 May, and Rome fell on 4 June. The abbey has been rebuilt.
