Around 1900 Capri drew northern Europeans seeking freedom from the laws and gossip of home. In 1902 Italian and German newspapers accused the arms maker Friedrich Alfred Krupp of affairs with young men on the island, and he died weeks later. The French poet Jacques d'Adelswärd-Fersen, exiled after a Paris scandal, built Villa Lysis above the sea in 1905 and lived there with Nino Cesarini until 1923.
