For four days the armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden fought Napoleon around Leipzig, in the largest battle in Europe before the First World War, with some 500,000 men engaged. Defeat drove the French back across the Rhine and ended Napoleon's hold on Germany. Close to 100,000 soldiers were killed or wounded. The giant monument on the battlefield was finished for the centenary in 1913.
