Peace prayers at Leipzig's St Nicholas Church spilled into weekly marches around the city's ring road. On 9 October 1989 about 70,000 people marched chanting 'We are the people' despite fears of a crackdown, and the security forces did not shoot. The protests spread across East Germany and forced the regime to open the Berlin Wall a month later.
