By August 1950 the North Korean advance had pushed South Korean and UN forces into a corner of the south-east behind the Nakdong River. Their six-week defence of the Busan Perimeter held long enough for the Incheon landing to turn the war. Busan served as the provisional capital, filled with refugees, and the world's only United Nations military cemetery was laid out there in 1951.
