In their Dahlem laboratory in December 1938, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann found that bombarding uranium with neutrons produced barium. Lise Meitner, Hahn's colleague for three decades until she fled Nazi Germany that summer, worked out with Otto Frisch that the nucleus had split, releasing great energy. Within seven years the discovery had produced nuclear reactors and the atomic bomb.
