The Nazi regime used the Summer Games to present a peaceful, modern Germany, briefly taking down anti-Jewish signs and filming the event for propaganda. Its new stadium held about 100,000 spectators. There the American sprinter Jesse Owens won four gold medals, a feat long remembered as a rebuke to Nazi racial ideas. Three years later Germany was at war.
