Alexander the Great founded Alexandria on Egypt's Mediterranean coast in 331 BC. Under the Ptolemies it became the leading Greek city of the eastern Mediterranean, with the Pharos lighthouse and the Library and Museum, where scholars such as Euclid and Eratosthenes worked. Little stands above ground, but forts, catacombs and temple remains still trace the ancient city.
