Built by Ferdinand de Lesseps' company with forced and later paid Egyptian labour, the canal linked the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and cut thousands of kilometres from the sea route between Europe and Asia. Egypt's debts from the project brought British occupation in 1882, and Nasser's nationalisation of the canal in 1956 set off the Suez Crisis.
