Frederick II of Prussia built Sanssouci as a summer retreat in 1745–47 and spent much of his reign there, hosting Voltaire and writing on philosophy and music. His wars seized Silesia and survived the Seven Years' War, turning Prussia into a European great power. He asked to be buried on the vineyard terrace, a wish carried out only in 1991.
