After nearly two years of talks chaired by US Senator George Mitchell, the British and Irish governments and most Northern Ireland parties reached agreement at Castle Buildings on the Stormont estate on Good Friday 1998. It set up power-sharing between unionists and nationalists, cross-border bodies and early prisoner releases, and was approved by referendums north and south of the border. It ended most of the violence of the Troubles.
