Civil rights marches against discrimination towards Catholics in housing, jobs and voting met violent responses, and three decades of conflict followed between republican and loyalist paramilitaries and the British state. About 3,500 people were killed. The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 brought power-sharing, but peace walls still divide some Belfast neighbourhoods.
