Hatshepsut, widow of Thutmose II, first ruled as regent for her young stepson Thutmose III and then took the full titles of a king, reigning for about twenty years. She sent a trading expedition to the land of Punt and built the terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari and obelisks at Karnak. Some time after her death, her statues were smashed and her name cut from many monuments.
