During the New Kingdom, pharaohs ruling an empire from Nubia to Syria poured its wealth into Thebes. They enlarged the temple of Amun at Karnak, built Luxor Temple and cut their tombs into the Valley of the Kings across the Nile. The west bank also holds Hatshepsut's terraced temple and Deir el-Medina, the village of the tomb builders.
