Howard Carter's team, funded by Lord Carnarvon, found the steps to Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings in November 1922. It was the first royal tomb in the valley found largely intact, and its contents set off a worldwide fascination with ancient Egypt. The young king's mummy still lies in the tomb; the treasures are now in Cairo.
