Months after the Anschluss the SS built Mauthausen beside a granite quarry above the Danube, where prisoners carried stone up 186 steps. It became the centre of some 40 subcamps, Gusen the largest, and the harshest category of camp for those the regime deemed beyond reform. About 190,000 people were held in the complex and at least 90,000 died before US troops arrived in May 1945.
