The first Olympic Games in the Southern Hemisphere opened at the Melbourne Cricket Ground weeks after the Suez invasion and the Soviet crushing of the Hungarian uprising, which led several countries to stay away. Hungary beat the Soviet Union in a bruising water polo match remembered as 'Blood in the Water'. At the closing ceremony athletes entered together rather than by nation, a custom kept ever since.
