Emmett Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago visiting family in the Mississippi Delta, was abducted and murdered after an encounter with a white woman at Bryant's Grocery in Money. An all-white jury in Sumner acquitted the two killers in about an hour; they later admitted the crime to a magazine. His mother's open-casket funeral in Chicago made his death a catalyst for the civil rights movement.
