Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott and three other women called the first women's rights convention in the United States, held in the Wesleyan Chapel at Seneca Falls, New York. About 300 people came, and 100 women and men signed a Declaration of Sentiments modelled on the Declaration of Independence. Its demand for women's right to vote, backed by Frederick Douglass, was the most disputed resolution.
