St. Augustine civil rights movement

From 1963 the dentist Robert Hayling led protests against segregation in St. Augustine, and Klansmen fired into homes in Lincolnville. In 1964 Martin Luther King Jr. joined the campaign and was arrested at the Monson Motor Lodge on 11 June; a week later the motel's manager poured what he said was acid into its pool during a swim-in. The campaign helped push the Civil Rights Act through Congress.
