In forest north-east of Warsaw, the SS murdered between 700,000 and 900,000 Jews at Treblinka, most of them from the Warsaw ghetto, within fifteen months. On 2 August 1943 prisoners rose up and about 200 escaped, of whom some 70 survived the war. The Nazis then razed the camp and planted it over. Today a field of about 17,000 granite stones marks the site.
