Warsaw Uprising

As the Red Army neared, the Polish Home Army rose against the German occupiers to free Warsaw before the Soviets arrived. Soviet forces halted across the Vistula, and the insurgents fought largely alone for 63 days. Some 16,000 fighters and 150,000 to 200,000 civilians died, many in mass executions. The Germans then expelled the survivors and razed most of the city.
