Five men linked to President Nixon's re-election committee were arrested breaking into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex. Reporting by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post, Senate hearings and secretly recorded White House tapes revealed a cover-up directed from the Oval Office. Facing impeachment, Nixon resigned in August 1974, the only US president to have done so.
