David Ben-Gurion declared the State of Israel in Tel Aviv on 14 May 1948, as fighting between Jewish and Arab forces turned into war with neighbouring states. By 1949 Israel held more land than the UN partition plan had proposed, and about 700,000 Palestinians had fled or been expelled, which Palestinians call the Nakba. The consequences shape the region today.
