The White City of Tel Aviv

Patrick Geddes's 1925 plan gave Tel Aviv its boulevards and garden blocks. From the 1930s architects trained in Europe, some at the Bauhaus and some of them refugees from Nazi Germany, filled it with white modernist apartment houses adapted to the heat, with balconies, raised ground floors and narrow shaded windows. UNESCO inscribed the White City and its several thousand modernist buildings in 2003.
