Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin had signed the Oslo Accords with the Palestine Liberation Organization and shared the Nobel Peace Prize for them. On 4 November 1995, as he left a peace rally of some 100,000 people in Tel Aviv's Kings of Israel Square, a Jewish extremist opposed to the accords shot him dead. The square was renamed after him, and the peace process faltered in the years that followed.
