Bede entered the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow as a boy of seven and spent his life there, writing on scripture, time and nature. His Ecclesiastical History of the English People, finished in 731, is the main source for early English history and spread the custom of counting years from the birth of Christ. St Paul's church at Jarrow keeps its dedication stone of 685.
