On Emperor Hadrian's orders, Roman soldiers built a 73-mile wall across northern Britain from the Tyne to the Solway, with forts, milecastles and turrets. Garrisoned by units from across the empire, it marked the north-west frontier for nearly three centuries. Writing tablets found at Vindolanda record a birthday party invitation, supply lists and a parcel of socks.
