Norse raiders sacked the monastery on Holy Island off the Northumbrian coast, killing monks and seizing treasure, a shock that the scholar Alcuin lamented in letters across Christendom. The attack is the conventional start of the Viking Age in Britain. Lindisfarne had been a centre of early English Christianity where the Lindisfarne Gospels were made.
